Chapter Eight

WHEN EMILY WOKE, Carson was no longer holding her as they sat on the sofa. Instead she was practically stretched out on top of him. And while she enjoyed the intimacy, and his warmth, it also embarrassed her.

“Don’t move,” he growled out before she could do just that.

“You said you would contact Pop and let him know what happened.”

“I will.”

“I need to stir up the fire.”

“It’s fine.” His arms tightened a little. “And I’m plenty warm at the moment.”

“I should get off of you. It must be uncomfortable. You’re hurt.”

“You moving is what’s going to be uncomfortable.”

“Oh.” She hadn’t thought of that. Of course, how could she, when she’d obviously moved into this position while they slept? Had it been an instinctive burrowing for security and warmth? Or a subconscious invitation for something more personal? “We can hardly stay like this.”

“Don’t see why not,” he answered, his lips trailing soft kisses from the shell of her ear down to the underside of her jaw. “I’m growing very fond of this particular position.”

Emily shivered, but not from the cold. Her right hand curled, gathering up a handful of his flannel shirt. She fought the temptation to press her hips tighter against his thigh.

“I’m surprised,” she quipped. “I’d have thought you’d prefer to be on top, in control.”

“Trust me, Sunshine.” His breath was warm as he laughed softly and pressed another series of kisses along the sensitive area he seemed intent on exploring. “We’ll get to that sooner or later.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea. You might aggravate your injury.” But she closed her eyes and felt her resistance melting with each light kiss.

“Kiss me and make it better.”

She couldn’t think of a single rational argument to give him. Nor could she voice an objection to his hand, large and warm, snaking under the hem of her sweater. She didn’t remind either of them that nothing good could come from this kind of intimacy, but instead, lost herself in the thrill of knowing he wanted her.

Forgotten were the differences between their lifestyles, their dispute over Natalie’s guardianship, and the fear and strain of the accident. All that mattered was satisfying her need to have his hands on her. So against all reason, in defiance of every protective instinct she had cultivated, she shifted ever so slightly. Ignoring his faint hiss of pain, along with the rumpled throw sliding to the floor, she pressed her mouth to his.

She’d meant to be gentle, maybe a little reserved. She intended to kiss him just long enough to quench her desire for him. Instead, she erupted.

It simply wasn’t enough to taste him, she had to devour him. It wasn’t enough to be pressed against him, she had to touch him. Unfamiliar needs pounded at her, body and soul, as they demanded release.

She let those needs free. She could risk those. She could live with knowing she’d turned to him and taken what she wanted.

What she couldn’t live with, what she wouldn’t allow to linger
