DEPOSITS

You will generally have to pay between one and six months’ deposit when you move into an apartment (the norm is you put down one month’s rent as deposit, and pay the first three months’ rent). At the end of your stay, landlords will try to keep as much of your deposit as possible, blaming you for any imperfection in the apartment, no matter how unlikely it is that you are the one who caused it. When you move into a new apartment make sure to document everything and have pictures ready to show your landlord at the end of your stay to prove you are not responsible for the problems. He might keep your deposit anyway, and there won’t be much you can do about it. Foreigners don’t really have access to legal aid in China. Try to build a good relationship with your landlord throughout your stay—pay your rent on time, don’t bother him with minor problems you can sort out yourself, follow the rules, and hope he will treat you right in the end.
