In my boxers only, I sat by the side of my bed, staring at the door. Fucking Tara and Seth had to come in and ruin my plans.

I rubbed the back of my neck. I considered doing some muscle work on the floor to distract myself, but I ended up deciding against it.

Two hours passed from Grey’s announcement that she would sleep in her old bedroom. I hadn’t shut an eye in the meantime. I wanted to smoke, but I didn’t feel like leaving Grey alone in the house.

The house was quiet enough to hear the dishwasher from the kitchen do its thing.

My door wasn’t entirely closed. I heard Grey breathing in her old room. In her sleep, she sounded unsettled, with her hasty breathing.

When she let out an unnatural cry for her own standards, I rushed to her side like a pathetic wimp.

The room was dark, and the opening of the door allowed light inside. Grey sat upright on her bed, panting. Her skin shimmered in sweat, and her hair was a mess, standing out in the weirdest corners.

Her eyes were on me, and that was all I asked for. She spoke quietly. “Can I sleep in your bed?”

I hated seeing her like this. But I had to toughen up. “You can’t.”

“Please.” I didn’t let her sway me. I didn’t even enter her room. I stood by the doorframe. “Then just sleep next to me. I beg you.”

I cursed under my breath as I proceeded into her room. A moment ago, I had been unyielding. There was something primal about her begging me to stay. I knew that if I went back into my room, I would feel like I failed her.

I took a seat by the edge of her bed, trying to regain some part of my sanity. When she approached me, rubbing my back with her hands and kissing the back of my neck, I lost the battle.

She put her arms around me when she whispered, “I’m sorry for sleeping here tonight. Tara and Seth just messed with my head. I wanted them to get back together, but I wasn’t ready to see them...”

Grey was sleepy. I joined her in bed. I pretended that this was just an instinct and that it didn’t matter to me whether I loved the fact that she needed me next to her. Fuck.

I lied to many people; I just didn’t think that I would ever lie to myself.

I spooned her like a pathetic piece of shit. She held on to my hand by her heart, and I almost lost it right then and there. An erection wasn’t going to help at this moment, but, fuck, she rubbed herself against my crotch. At the same time, she tried to find a comfortable position.

I didn’t fall asleep. I counted her breaths, watching her chest as it rose and fell. Her heartbeat was increased, but she was deep in sleep.

At some point, I dozed off.
