Chapter 6 - Ryan

I got shit done. I logged in to the workstation to go over a few things, but instead of being able to focus, my eyes constantly drifted over toward Bethy. Usually, I was able to move on from my trysts without much effort. I was very much a ‘wham, bam, thank you ma’am’ type of man, but this chemistry I had with Bethy, wasn’t dying down.

I stood from the desk and walked over to where she was. There was nothing wrong with being friends, right? I knocked on the door lightly, but apparently, she was better at ignoring the elephant in the room. She had her head down and was scribbling away on a few forms. I walked in and stood right in front of her. I caught a glance at what she was working on, but she quickly flipped the papers over and focused her attention on me.

“Yes, Ryan. Is everything ok?” She was curt but still polite.

“I apologize for barging in on you like this. I knocked, but I don’t think you heard me.” I sat on the edge of her desk, my leg almost grazing hers.

She glanced down at my proximity before raising her eyes to look back at me, she tried to hide her excitement, but her breathing became just a tad more frequent then it was a second ago. I’d only been with her once, but I already knew her tells. “It’s fine, did you need something?”

“Nothing in particular, just checking in with you to see how the export business is treating you.”

She raised her eyebrow slightly, “You really want to know?”

“Of course.”

“Well, to be honest, there’s a lot of room for improvement.”

That caught my attention. Usually, new workers always said everything is wonderful when they started a new job.

“What about you? How are you liking it so far?” She asked.

“Let’s just say that I couldn’t agree more. The executives are mostly just in here for the bottom line, and the company itself has a mediocre if not poor track record and staff morale is dangerously low.”

“Exactly!” Her eyes lit up. We sat there and talked for almost an hour about the different things that we both believed that the company could be doing better. Bethy was passionate about the workforce.

“Wow, you seem super invested for someone who just started here.” It was a breath of fresh air, but still strange.

“I’ve always been placed a few steps behind the herd because I’m a woman, so I work hard. I am focused, and when I see something that needs to be changed, I do my damndest to make sure that change happens.”

“I would be afraid to sit across from you at any board meeting.”

She smirked like she had something more to say, but she didn’t. This woman was the complete opposite of what I normally went for. Maybe that was why I was so intrigued by her.

“Crap!” She stood abruptly and gathered a few things, “I don’t know if you are interested, but maybe you want to meet up for drinks later? I’d love to pick your brain some more.
