Jefferson had just managed to get the wolves calmed down when a loud explosion of laughter came from above.

They all turned and stared at the office.

From their angle, all they could see was Nick standing hands on hips, chin lowered, gaze aimed at the office floor.

He must have sensed their stares because he turned and looked out at them.

He flashed a grin and shrugged.

Jefferson sighed. “I’m freaking doomed.”

Chapter Six

BYGUL DIDN’T THINK it bode well that the wolf mechanics were rolling around on the floor, laughing like loons, in response to the idea that the panther and bear might be mates.

Call him crazy, but that seemed a bit discouraging.

Especially since he was there to try and get a handle on the mating situation before all fifty matchmaking cats descended on the garage tomorrow.

That was a disaster just waiting to happen, so he was there to try and lay the groundwork so that things went as smoothly as they possibly could the next day.

But now, with the wolves laughing it up and the panther looking like he’d been hit over the head by an anvil and—was the bear laughing too?

Bygul popped into the office in time to hear the bear say in between giggles, “My mate? Don’t be ridiculous. I think I’d know if the panther was my mate.”

Nick was standing beside her, hands on hips, staring down at her. “And how would you know if you haven’t shifted around him yet?”

Kate’s giggles tapered off, then she said, “I think my bear would have given me a clue if that were the case!”

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t you just say your bear perked up when you got close to the panther. Don’t you think that might have constituted a clue?”

Kate scowled. “You suck.”

Yeah, this was a disaster already.

Bygul popped back into the garage. “G.K., Cleo, I thought you were supposed to be helping this mating along! What’s the big idea? The panther looks sick at the thought of being mated to the bear and the bear’s in total denial. How is this helping their romance along?”

Cleo, who happened to be hanging out on Jefferson’s shoulder at that moment, turned her head and hissed at Bygul, startling Jefferson, who stroked her fur and murmured, “it’s okay, sweetie.”

She let out a plaintive meow and Bygul growled in frustration.

“What do you mean you don’t like the bear?”

Cleo meowed a couple additional times and G.K. let out a sound that Bygul could only describe as the cat version of a snicker, then plopped on his side, lifted a leg and began cleaning himself quite vigorously.

Great.

Perhaps the bear wasn’t the right mate for the panther after all.

Cleo seemed extremely put out, but then again, Bygul had a feeling she’d hate anyone he suggested given her extremely possessive stance on Jefferson’s shoulder at the moment.

Her back legs were planted on his left shoulder, while her front legs were draped across the top of his head and every once in a while she leaned over to swipe his forehead with her tongue.
