CHAPTER 4

THE CURSED CROP

Velma switched on her flashlight and moved toward the dark woods.

Shaggy planted his feet. “Uh-uh! Like, there’s no way I’m going into those creepy woods!”

“Me reither,” Scooby said as he shook his head.

“Aw, come on, guys,” Velma said. She marched to the Mystery Machine, pulled out a brightly colored box, and rattled it. “Would you do it for a Scooby Snack?”

Shaggy and Scooby both shook their heads. “You can’t buy us off that easily,” Shaggy said.

Velma opened the box and shook some treats into her hand. “Would you do it for two Scooby Snacks?”

Shaggy licked his lips and giggled. “Like, I guess you can buy us off that easily.”

“Reah! Reah!” Scooby agreed, his tongue wagging with hunger.

Velma laughed and tossed the treats their way. The friends caught two apiece in midair and gulped them down in one bite. Velma turned and headed for the woods.

Shaggy and Scooby nervously followed. After a couple of feet, Scooby came to a halt. “Relma, Relma!”

Velma sighed and spun around. “I thought two Scooby Snacks would be enough for a simple stroll through the woods.”

“No, a rue! Rook!” Scooby said as he sniffed the dirt in front of him.

Velma aimed her flashlight at the ground and saw a thin, black cord. She followed the cord with her flashlight to see that it led to an electrical socket on the side of the house. “Good job, Scooby. That is a clue!” She pointed her flashlight in the opposite direction. “Let’s see where this electrical cord leads.”

“Like, I was afraid you were going to say that,” Shaggy said through chattering teeth.

The three of them followed the cord deeper into the dark woods. It snaked around crooked trees and beneath thorny bushes until it finally stopped at a small, black box. The device had a hole on one end and a clear, plastic tank full of liquid on the other.

Scooby-Doo sniffed the strange device. “Rut is it?”

“That’s a smoke machine,” Velma said, leaning forward for a closer look. “It’s the kind people use for special effects in movies and concerts.”

“So, like, the creepy fog is just special effects smoke?” Shaggy asked.

“That’s right,” Velma agreed. She crossed her arms and grinned. “And I think this case just got closer to being solved.”

“Well, how do you like that, Scoob?” Shaggy asked. He gave the smoke machine a kick. “Nothing but special effects smoke!”

PFFFFT!

A burst of smoke blasted from one end of the machine.

“Zoinks!” Shaggy said as he stumbled backward. He bumped into Velma, knocking her glasses to the ground.

“My glasses,” Velma said as she dropped to the ground and felt around. “I can’t see a thing without my glasses.”

The smoke spread out, creating more eerie fog throughout the forest.

Scooby-Doo began to whine and whimper.

“Like, what are you scared of, pal?” Shaggy asked. “We know it’s just special effects fog now.”

“Not the rog,” Scooby said. He pointed over Shaggy’s shoulder. “R-r-r-rook!”

Shaggy turned and saw that the trees behind them suddenly grew angry faces in their thick bark. The
