“Good morning, Mrs. Duncan,” the commander said, and helped Celia up the last step on to the bridge, “glad to have you on board. Ah—my name is Stafford.”

“How do you do, Commander Stafford? Your pleasure couldn’t possibly equal mine.”

They walked to one side of the curious bridge.

“It must have been rather a shocking experience, ramming that submarine,” the commander said sympathetically. As he spoke he glanced covertly at his new passenger—he was surprised by both the youth and good looks of Captain Duncan’s wife.

“Not at all,” she surprised him further, “it was terribly exciting. I am sure,” she added, smiling up at him, “not even a destroyer captain could have done it better. By the way ...” looking astern, “I can’t see the old reprobate’s ship.”

“I’m afraid,” Stafford told her, “we lost the old reprobate, as you call him, shortly after we began our turn.”

“You’ll look for him?”

“On no account—no. It would be suicide in this, and in any case I’ve been away from the escort too long. I meant what I said about that battleship, you know.”

“I was afraid you did,” she smiled back, and he thought—old Duncan picked a winner here, all right! She went on: “I can just see the old captain now, beard and all. Smirking his dear old head off at how he tricked you. I am quite sure, commander,” she ended seriously, “he will be in port before us.”
