CHAPTER 10

RESTORATION

Paladin took the elevator this time to get back to his apartment. The stream of blood oozing from his body produced enough urgency to make tact an afterthought. Besides, the added stealth made it easy to navigate past curious eyes, and the cloth he’d found in the sewers—albeit not the most sterile of options—provided a suitable tourniquet to slow the bleed.

“Lydia’s going to kill me,” he murmured as the elevator slowed to the top floor. He pressed the code and the doors opened. Then he phased in to view.

Lydia turned from the kitchen counter to find him. “Are you crazy?” she asked frantically, holding out her tablet.

The words NEWS FLASH: HAS PALADIN JOINED DARK PHASE? met his gaze. “What is it?”

“This just in,” a male reporter said, standing outside of Highcrest Village. “It appears that the body of fifty-six-year-old, Professor James Stelton was found just moments ago, right here, outside of his Highcrest Village home. Authorities and eyewitnesses alike claim that the assailant phased in and out of view before slipping past police and disappearing into a back alley. Some describe the figure as wearing a black and silver suit, similar to recent inductee of Super-Normals: Paladin. One of the Professor’s personal guards said that there was commotion in his bedroom and the assailant assaulted two guards before making the twenty-five-story plunge and landing on top of a car below.

“It is unknown at this time if authorities are naming Paladin as a prime suspect. The cause of death has not been released. However, if anyone sees Paladin, they are warned to stay away and contact the police force immediately. At this time, Thief has not been ruled out either. Stay tuned to this broadcast for more information as it arrives in our studio.”

Paladin lifted his helmet. “It wasn’t me.”

Lydia slapped him. “Of course it wasn’t you. But I thought you were going to wait for me here. ‘It’d be nice to take a few hours off to relax,’” she mocked. “What a load of crap.”

“I deserve that. I’m . . . I’m sorry, Lydia.”

“You know, Sebas, you’re starting to be sorry a little too much for my taste lately.” She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small box. “I found this while I was out there tonight. Thought it might inspire you to do something great. Change the world. But maybe you’re too wrapped in you to even notice.” She placed it in his hand. “You’re doing that solo thing again, and I can’t be on the outside, hoping you invite me along for the ride. I’m trying to hold on here for you, give you a chance to make it all right, but this it really starting to stretch me a wee bit thin.”

“I know. I just wanted to talk to the Professor. Get his perspective on this whole thing. Maybe he could have shed some light on what’s going on.”

“So I leave you alone for one hour and this is what happens? A man is dead, Sebas.
