Chapter 25

After eating a homemade meal of baked chicken and gravy with peas over noodles—that Vicki had directed Connor to make—they settled on the old couch with a mug of hot cocoa.

"I called Melanie today," Connor said. "She wants to talk to you."

"Me, and not Dan?"

"Yes. She thinks you'll be nicer than Dan." He grinned. "She doesn't know how passionate you can get about revenge."

Vicki had to laugh at him. "Yeah. But I'll be nice. Did you give her my number?"

"I wanted to ask you, first. I can have her call you tomorrow, since you've been sidelined."

Vicki couldn't believe it. "Just wait a second. No one told me about being sidelined for tomorrow."

"Oh, yes we did, just like making dinner tonight." He pulled a piece of paper from his pocket and handed it to her. It was from her doctor.

She read over the thing. "I kind of remember this. Yeah. Two weeks without major activity. I could sit at the table and work on things tomorrow, right?"

Connor grinned. "Read further."

She kept reading. "A week away from work, completely?" She looked up at him. "Who would know?"

"Janelle and your whole team have been told. You're going to stay over here and aren't even allowed over there at all."

Something kept nagging at her brain. "Wait. Jenkins said I have more work coming. It's for all his employees on the 24th."

"He hasn't mentioned it to me," Connor said. "Maybe I'm not invited?"

She chuckled. "I don't think you can get out of it. Keep dreaming, but you'll be there, I'm sure."

He thought for a moment. "Is there any way you can turn down catering that event? I just don't trust what he'll do."

"I have to see what Janelle has done. Jenkins mentioned it to me, but I never got around to replying yet. If she accepted, we have to do it. They're going to need me."

"Or not. If I were you, I'd be a figurehead for that business and let Janelle run it."

That was odd. "What would I do all day long, then?"

He chuckled. "Work for Dan. He asked me if he should hire you as a paralegal. I had a nice chat with him today, and he wanted to know, from a psychological standpoint, if it'd be tough working with a sibling."

Vicki couldn't believe it. They were talking behind her back? "What did you tell him?"

Connor chuckled. "Nothing bad, so don't get upset. I told him that working with family is tough, at best, however, you're both professionals. As long as he lets you do your thing and takes whatever you do at face value, you should both be okay. As for you, if you did work for him, realize he's the boss and you have to do what he asks. With those boundaries in place, you'd both be fine."

"I'd work from home, I guess?"

Connor smiled, as if he knew all the secrets. "They're actually looking for a home down here. Dan wants to move away from Denver. They don't like the schools there, and Jane's sick of the traffic.
