FOURTEEN

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO—1964

After the scorpion incident the entire household felt bruised and leery, like kicked dogs all settled in various corners. Ignacia had been given the rest of the day off, Juan Antonio went for a walk, Elena drove the children to her mother’s house, Remedio claimed he was overheated and needed to lie down, and Jaime shut himself in his office to read and to unconvince himself that he had seen a scorpion reanimate itself. His head was bent low over the book, with only fifty or so pages to go. He almost dozed off in this position, realizing with a start he’d been reading the same paragraph over and over, and upon waking he saw two things at once: Nearing the end of the book, Maria Rocha had started using the first-person I, inserting herself into the narration as though she were no longer retelling history but beginning an autobiography, questioning her motives and justifying her choice of subject.
