I may not be able to rush Dave out of the house, but I can hasten our separation in another way. Our Honda Odyssey van is leased in his name and, as much as I love it, and especially the heated seats, it’s time for me to get my own car. Now that we have a temporary support order in effect, I can show that I have some income. In fact, I learn from the salesman at CarMax that a court order can be considered more reliable than a pay stub. As he shows me around the lot, I realize that the first and last time I bought a car was my senior year in high school when I saved $800 from my Bob Evans waitress job and got a 1971 Dodge Dart. The idea of choosing my own car again now gives me a small thrill. I take my time perusing my options before settling on a 1996 royal blue Ford SUV. It’s sporty but not unwieldy, bright but not overly flashy like that green sports car my dad brought home during my parents’ divorce. Mostly I can’t resist the name of this particular model: it’s an Escape. I’ll take it.
