“How are we going to go after them?” Luca asks after Abrianna disappears down the hall to the master bathroom for a bath. I don’t want her to hear the specifics of what we’re going to do to get this shit straightened out.

I’ve never just jumped right to the most obvious and quick of choices. Killing them has always been too easy of a solution. They took out my father and uncle Sal, Nico and Vinny’s dad, because they wanted to take over my family’s hold on the city’s construction union and underground gambling rooms. Uncle Sal ran Atlantic City before Alec, and he created extensions of his high-stakes backroom games in locations all across New York City.

Before him, you’d have to go down some back alley in Chinatown where the Triads hold theirs. We use our legitimate businesses and offices to host our events, which is more desirable for the Wall Street assholes and their friends looking to throw their money around. We gladly take it.

The Triads cater more to the everyday man. But they aren’t even competition right now as they’re being taken over by the Bychkov Bratva family after Alec and I took out the Triads’ leaders for kidnapping his woman and trying to use her to extort some bullshit deal with us.

We don’t respond well when someone we love is being threatened or harmed.

The Cicariellos wanted what was rightfully mine by my father’s passing, and they thought because I was only twenty-five, that I wouldn’t be prepared. It was a real fucking wakeup call for them when they discovered me, my brothers, and my cousins were all ready to step up and claim our positions.

Which is why death is too simple for them.

Over the past five years, I’ve taken everything from them. I killed the men who they hired to kill my father and uncle. I burned down each of their restaurants and gyms they owned. And when Joey, the head of the family, saw I wasn’t stopping until I got everything of theirs and then killed them, they went into hiding at their Long Island estate, locking themselves behind thick concrete walls and a small army of men with a state-of-the-art security system.

Since then, I’ve dismantled their prostitution business, not wanting to keep that shit for me or my family. I also took over their hold on the trucking union, which is why they’ve had to resort to the drug trade like a common street gang. I would let them have that, too, but not when they drag my woman and her entire family’s business into it.

I think things through first. I don’t act on impulse or based off of what I’m feeling in the moment. That’s how my father raised me to be. He always said that I needed to be the voice of reason when everyone else was screaming for war. I had to make the right decisions for the family, even if no one else saw that.
