They arrived at the police station, a two-story red-brick building conveniently located on the corner of Maple Street and Main street. Tor was happy to see that DJ was still his old self. Though he did seem worried for some reason. The moment the kids piled into the station, his brow furrowed and he got that hangdog look.

“Um, T?” he said. “Wasn’t your father supposed to drop in after dinner? He said he was going to take the late shift tonight. I tried calling but he doesn’t pick up.”

“Something happened, DJ,” said T. “Dad got infected by the fungus we found in the forest yesterday.”

“Fungus? Infected?” said DJ, not comprehending. “You mean he’s sick or something?”

“Very sick,” said T. “You remember what happened to Buck? How he passed out after that thing got stuck to his face?”

“Yeah,” said DJ, scratching his scalp. “That was some pretty nasty stuff.”

“Well, the same thing happened to dad just now.”

“To all our parents,” said Tabby.

“But Buck’s all right, isn’t he?” said DJ, screwing up his face. “I mean, the doc checked him out and he said he was fine.”

T shook her head. “Buck’s not all right. He only seems all right. The thing is, Buck—and our parents—have all been turned into some kind of…” She hesitated.

“Alien zombie eating machines?” suggested Temp dryly.

Now DJ, who’d been listening intently all this time, leaned back and gave them an expression of bewilderment. His eyes darted from T to Tor to Temp to Tabby. Then he threw his head back and barked a hyena like laugh.

“Good one, T!” he guffawed. “You really had me going there!”

“It’s not a joke, DJ!” cried Tabby. “All of our parents have been turned into alien zombies!”

DJ gulped back his last laugh. From T or Temp he knew to expect some good-natured joking around from time to time. But not from Tabby. If Tabby said her parents were alien zombies, there was something more serious going on.

“Seriously?” he said, his eyes wide. He got up from his seat and walked over to the coffee machine.

“Seriously,” said Tabby. “That alien slime is dangerous, DJ. It infects people and turns them into mindless eating machines, interested in nothing but their next meal. We have to stop it before it takes over the whole town.”

“Or the whole country,” said T.

“Or the whole world,” murmured Temp.

Tor, who’d been searching the police station fridge for something edible, now opened the freezer.

“You have to call in the National Guard,” said T earnestly.

DJ’s head jerked up from his task of placing a fresh coffee filter in the machine. “You’re not serious. The National Guard?”

“Or the army. Or the marines. Someone has to stop this thing from spreading any further.”

“I don’t know, T,” said DJ, shaking his head. He walked over to the small kitchenette, conveniently placed near the back of the station, and started filling a coffeepot with water. “I can’t just go and call in the National Guard on a whim, you know. There’s penalties involved if they come out here for nothing.
