Chapter

Thirteen

No one wants to leave, but who is going to argue with a vampire?

No one in the room.

Luka’s arms tighten around me like steel bands as he and his brother exchange a shuttered look. “Micah stays.”

“Fine.” Aleric moves so Micah can sit in one of the now empty chairs beside the bed. Once he’s settled, Aleric comes to stand beside the bed, staring down at Conner. “He’s trapped in the Nether-Nether.”

“The whatsit?” Saidie asks.

“The place between the realms.” Aleric runs a hand through his black hair, and I’m struck yet again how alike he and his brother are, yet so different. Aleric is taller, his jawline more defined than Luka’s. Those piercing green eyes are the same, though. “Bad juju there.”

“How can we bring him back?” I’m still holding onto his hand, afraid that if I let go, what little I found of him will slip away.

“I been thinkin’ on dis, chere.” Aleric sits in one of the chairs closest to us. “You remember when you helped me find Saidie, to wake her?”

I nod. I’ve just been thinking about that.

“You said she belonged to you, dat her blood was yours and mine.”

It’s freaky. How does he know what I’ve been thinking? Can vampires read minds?

“Wha’ you did, chere, it was de power of a master vampire.”

“What?” I whisper. “That’s not possible. Mom said I’m a syphon, I absorb others’ gifts. I was just using what I took from you.”

“Non, chere. You ne’er touched me.”

“That’s not possible,” I argue.

“Oui, is not possible, but is true nonedeless. It would also explain why ma fille was drownin’ you in death the way she would a vampire when you touched her.”

What he’s suggesting simply isn’t possible. It’s not.

Or is it?

I think back to my last few months at Compton, to the reason I worked so hard to convince them all I was better. I was hearing everyone’s hearts beating in their chest. And toward the end, I could hear the blood rushing through their veins.

And in the dream world, I started hearing the thump, thump, thump of a heart again.

“Wha’ is it, chere?” Aleric leans forward, and I tell him what I’ve never told another living soul, not even Micah. It’s a secret I kept all to myself until this minute.

“Dat makes sense.” Aleric nods.

“How does that make sense?” I ask, aggravated. “I’m not a vampire. Far as I know, you’re the first one I’ve ever met.”

“Far as you know.” He grins wolfishly, and I understand Saidie’s fascination with him. He’s a good-looking devil. Scary, but sexy as hell. Not that I’d tell Luka that. He’d get a complex.

“I was locked in a mental institute,” I say dryly. “I think they’d know if a vampire was roaming around snacking on the patients.”

“Easy, Blue.” Micah yawns. “Let the man talk. Don’t get on the freak-out train unless you have to.”

“It cain’t have hap’ned in de institute.” Aleric thrums his fingers against the comforter as he thinks. “Dis ability you have, it is som’din dat had to have been passed in de blood before you were born, chere, or you’d be a full-fledged vampire.
