From his location, perched in the frame of the rafters, Ethan could see the position of every man and woman outside the house. He was surprised to see that Hurley and the strangers he’d come with were actually making a lot of headway on their side of the barn.

“Here, take this,” Ethan heard a man say from below.

Ethan looked down to find two of Devlin’s men sneaking around the far side of the house toward the cellar with a shovel.

What are they up to?

He had finished securing the steel brackets he had created for the barn and decided he was going to find out. He looked about, but his ladder was no longer leaning up against the main beam. He scanned the interior for any of the other ladders, but it seemed that all of them had been moved.

Ethan placed the hammer in his back pocket and grabbed a hold of the roof joint to pull himself around to the outside ledge.

“Raine,” he called to his brother, who was pulling another plank off the pile, “a ladder?”

His oldest brother handed the wood to Cole and Will, who immediately set it up against the framed wall and lined it up with the others below it. It didn’t take long before they had the plank nailed in place and Cole was heading for another.

“Lose something?” Raine asked, concern etched on his brow. Ethan thought he’d laugh it off, but as he set one of the make-shift ladders up against the building, he scanned the mob working on the barn.

Ethan quickly climbed down.

“Did you see those men disappear around the side of the house?” Raine asked.

Ethan nodded. “I don’t trust them. Hell, I don’t even trust Hurley. He’s up to something and I want to know what it is.”

“Why do you suppose two men, strangers to the area, would be helping to build a barn and then sneak around the back of this house with shovels?” Ethan asked. A part of him was feeling a little facetious, but another hoped Raine, the deputy, would have a good answer.

He thought about Jack’s treasure. Certainly, they couldn’t believe there was treasure buried in the Nolan’s backyard.

“Let’s go find out,” Raine said.

It was as good an answer as any.

Ethan glanced over the construction and when he saw Hurley busily hammering a plank into place, he hesitated. He did not want Devlin to win this contest—especially because it was for Grace—but the nagging feeling that something was amiss would not relent.

He nodded agreement. “Let’s go.”

“Ethan?” Mr. Diggle from the telegraph office stepped in front of Ethan before he could follow the men. “I have this telegram for Miss Nolan.” He held out a folded yellow slip of paper. “Only I cannot seem to locate the woman.”

Telegram?

Ethan held out his hand. “I can see that it gets delivered.”

“Would you? I’d be much obliged. Thank you.” He handed Ethan the message and quickly turned for the little black buggy parked right in front of the house.

Ethan unfolded the telegram and scanned the brief contents.
