Esteemed Martyrs: Ignatius and Polycarp

Nevertheless, the most famous instances of Christian martyrdom in the first half of the second century actually became famous, in part, because they represented fairly infrequent cases. Among the most celebrated was the martyrdom of Ignatius, bishop of Antioch, perhaps around 110. Ignatius was arrested and condemned to death in the East and taken to Rome under military guard, probably in the company of other prisoners who had been similarly sentenced. Others are also said to have taken the road to Rome before them, “for the glory of God.” The letters that Ignatius wrote on his final journey became justly famous for several reasons, not the least of which was Ignatius’s stated determination to die as a martyr. He wrote ahead to the Christians in Rome, imploring them not to try to intercede on his behalf:
