“No.” Maya’s hand went protectively to her belly once more. “No.” She stood up. “You can leave now, Mr. Strathmore,” she said stiffly.

Colin stood as well, towering over her. “It’s my child too.” He answered softly, aware of his imposing size and not wanting to frighten her.

“By accident. By chance.”

“It doesn’t make it any less true.”

Maya pursed her lips, knowing the reality of his words, but not wanting to hear them.

He put his hand out to her. “I’m willing to give you very generous compensation if you will give me full custody. You could…think of yourself as a surrogate?” He offered, trying to sound reasonable. “You can always have another child, but this is the only one I’ll be able to have. Anything at all— name it, and it’s yours.”

“You think you can buy my baby?” She was outraged. “You really need to leave. Now.”

“Maya, don’t think of it that way.” He remained immobile. “Think of the life you could give any future children you might have if you give me this one. I can give you a house in Park Slope. A housekeeper? A nanny? Private schools? Admittance to any university in the world! I’m also prepared to give you an upfront sum of fifty million dollars.”

Maya’s eyes widened. She felt her heart begin to accelerate, and her body tensed. Fifty million dollars? Was he serious? What kind of person had that sum of money to just throw around? And more than that, what kind of person thought he could use his money to buy another person?!

“First of all,” Maya said stiffly, “Not that it’s any of your business, but no— I can’t have any future children. And secondly, there isn’t a sum of money in the entire world that would entice me to give up my child.”

“Then think about this child! Don’t you want him or her to have the best life possible?” He appealed to her, earnestly. He waved his hand around the apartment. “Do you really want your child to grow up here?”

“Now you’re just being insulting.” She hissed, her hazel eyes narrowing. “I grew up here.”

“Don’t you want the best for your child? For our child?” He bent his head to look at her. “I’m not trying to be insulting. But you have to admit that this isn’t the best neighborhood…”

“Thousands of kids have grown up in this neighborhood and gone on to lead happy, productive lives.” Maya’s eyes flashed in anger. “And wherever you grew up couldn’t have been that great— after all, you grew up into the type of person who thinks he can buy people. There’s a word for that, you know.”

Colin sighed and raked his fingers through his hair. “That’s not fair.”

“And it’s not fair of you to think that I would give up my baby!” She shot back.

He paused and looked at her. Her shoulders were heaving and her breathing matched her agitation. He exhaled loudly. “You’re right. You’re right. I’m sorry.” He realized he had taken the wrong tact with her.
