Chapter Eight

Blake twisted his watch around his wrist several times as he took in a few deep breaths. It had been exactly a week since he’d seen her last, and he wasn’t sure how the night would play out if he tried to approach her again. He hadn’t had the chance to get her number, and she hadn’t been listed on the website, which was odd. He took a sip of the chardonnay he’d ordered and cleared his throat as he watched the door.

Charlene had already come through, and he’d thought about what Aiyana had told him about the woman. She was eyeing him as she sipped on her wine, and he found that she wasn’t bad looking; it was just that she came across as too forward when she talked with someone, desperate even. Blake formulated a plan as he finished his first drink of the evening.

He heard the buzzer go off and took his drink over to Charlene’s table. He had seen Briana walk in and was sure she had brought along Aiyana. She was most likely just hiding from him.

“Well, hello, handsome,” Charlene said as she smiled at him brightly. She was still wearing a little too much mascara for his taste, but he knew that some men wouldn’t mind.

“Hey, Charlene. How are your cats?” He asked her as he ordered them both another drink with his hand in the air and two fingers raised.

“Oh, they’re doing wonderfully. Whiskers, he just-”

“Wait, hang on a second,” Blake told her as the drinks were being set down. “I don’t have a lot of time to say this, but I think I’d better. You seem like a very nice woman, Charlene, and I’d hate to see any of the men miss a great opportunity here tonight because they’re scared off by the stories of your cats. I’m going to be frank with you. I like cats, but men aren’t here to talk about them. They want to hear about you. So when the next man sits down at your table and asks you something about yourself, like what your hobby might be, tell him about something else that you do. Do you like to read?”

She nodded her head and looked at him, enraptured, as he told her the truth.

“Then tell them about a recent book you read. Don’t get me wrong, you should tell them you have pets, but don’t go into too much detail. The trick is to leave a man wanting to know a little more about you, so that he has to ask you on date. Once you’re one on one with him, ask him about what he does, too. We do like to talk about ourselves, sometimes.”

The buzzer rang, and he stuck out his hand to shake with her. Charlene took it, reluctantly, and watched him leave to sit at another table. He sat down with a brunette who had straight hair and blue eyes. She was polite and nodded at him as he sat down, but he knew immediately there was nothing there.
