CHAPTER SIX

Dear Lisa,

I’m sending you this letter by Express Air from St. Paul de Vence, France, so you won’t

wonder where I am. By the time you receive it, I’ll be married to the man of my dreams, and

Elizabeth will have a father.

HANNAH refrained from saying anything about the adoption. That could come later when

she and Lisa met privately in the lawyer’s office.

The only reason I haven’t spoken of Dominic Giraud before now is because I hoped, but

never believed he would propose to me. Once he did, everything happened so fast, I still feel

like I’m in a dream.

We met one evening when he had a Jeep accident by the river behind the museum. I fell

madly in love with him. He and his friends have plans to build a bullet train across the U.S.

He wanted permission to run track over our land. One thing led to another. It was love at first

sight for him and Elizabeth. I think he’s marrying me so he can have her for his own

daughter.

Tomorrow the private ceremony will take place in a little church filled with fifteenth-century

frescoes Dominic discovered as a boy while he was out hiking. It’s called Chapelle Sainte

Elizabeth, if you can imagine.

Vence is his birthplace. It’s called the City of Art, set on a hill near Nice overlooking the

impossibly blue Mediterranean. There’s an old town, a walled circle of Medieval buildings

all packed together you have to see to believe.

From his ancestral villa, you look out over olive and orange trees, plus flowers of every

description stretching to the sea. The soft air is filled with perfume. There’s only one word to

describe this part of the world. Exquisite.

Dominic’s family owns the House of Eve. Their perfumeries process the precious oils from

the flowers that grow on the hillsides. I learned today that this area of France is called “God’s

Garden.” It’s so beautiful here, it hurts.

You remember the Matisse print hanging in the living room, the one with the red background

I bought? Well today I saw the Chappelle Matisse, the all-white chapel with stained-glass

windows he designed and decorated. It’s reputed to be his masterpiece. I can see why.

She was rambling again.

Dominic’s mother has been vacationing at his sister’s villa in Antibes. When he called to

surprise her with the news that we had flown in to be married, she planned a party for tonight

where I’ll be meeting his family for the first time. I imagine they’ll be as wonderful as his

friends, Alik and Zane. Today they took us to lunch overlooking the water.

Her hand trembled, making it difficult to write. Was it only a week ago he’d come to her

apartment demanding to know why she’d put the property up for sale? Now, unbelievably, it

was the eve of their wedding. Dominic was the kind of man whose drive and resources

allowed him to move at lightning speed to accomplish any objective.

Her eyes strayed to the antique canopied bed where a simple sleeveless black dress with a

hem just above the knee lay on the eiderdown comforter. A gift from Dominic she couldn’t

refuse.
