Q: What apparently bipedal sea creature washed ashore in England in the 1950s?

A: In 1953 and then in 1954, two bizarre specimens of dead sea creature washed ashore at Canvey Island in Essex, England. They were collectively dubbed the Canvey Island Monster. The first was nearly a meter long and the second was over a meter long. They appeared to have large hind limbs, each with five toes, as well as gills and bulging eyes. People thought they had stumbled upon some unknown aquatic bipedal creature. But the two carcasses turned out to be those of decaying anglerfish, aka monkfish (scientific name Lophius piscatorius), which are, indeed, pretty bizarre-looking fish that can reach up to two meters in length, but they are fairly common and known to inhabit the area where they washed ashore, and they have fins, not limbs.
