We woke up the next morning with mountains stretched out all around us.

A shiver ran up my spine and I blinked happily at the variety of green pushing its way into the cold van along with the morning sunlight.

Gates and I were well covered by sheets, a soft fuzzy brown blanket, and a quilt that was layered with so many greens that the shapes of our bodies underneath almost made it look like the landscape surrounding us. The blankets smelled like they’d just been taken off a sunlit clothesline, so strong was the mixture of lavender and Highland air that filled my nose as I breathed them in. There was also the familiar sawdust scent that was so deeply a part of this man sleeping next to me.

My body tingled as I remembered last night with him. Sure, I’d never pictured our first time in the back of a van, but it was nothing short of amazing. I woke him with a gentle kiss and looked deep into his green eyes as they blinked open.

I smiled, more happy and relaxed than I think I’d ever felt. It looked like Gates had been right about us. He was learning to stay relatively still and I was making good progress toward learning to let go. I’d not only slept on the side of the road, but had actually enjoyed it. My becoming-my-mother worries from yesterday seemed miles away now, as if I’d left them behind on the side of one of the winding roads.

“Good mornin’ tae you, my Mahlee.” Gates’ froggy voice was full of dew and stardust.

We pulled on warm socks and watched the sun rise over the mountains, the crisp morning air making us wrap our arms tighter around each other. Then we drove the rest of the way down the Trossachs, quietly humming the songs Gates had sung to me just yesterday. We visited a Green Welly Stop for petrol and breakfast, and then kept on south, heading for Ayrshire. The longer we drove, the more Gates relaxed. He’d always seemed easy-going, but watching him out on the road was a whole different version of this laid-back man, and I wanted to soak it up, see if I could be just a little more like him.

After a brief brush with civilization as we passed through Glasgow, we found the countryside again, then, after not too much longer, the coast. I hadn’t realized how much I had missed the water until I saw the glittering blue expanse and felt something like homesickness get caught in my throat. But there wasn’t time for reminiscing. We had arrived at our destination and had places to see.

“I thought we could spend the day in Largs and then stay in Fairlie before headin' south for the day tomorrow.” Gates watched me take in the coastal town with its geometric roads and tall, red church steeples popping up over the rooftops.

I nodded, the fact that it sounded like he had somewhat of a plan helped, but even that was becoming less and less necessary.
