MACKENZIE

WE SPEND THE afternoon going through the motions of discussing new ideas to keep hunters away and making alliances to seek mates. I’m dying to go home by the time it’s over, but there’s dinner and it’s tradition to have it together before everybody leaves.

I’m glad this meeting happens once a year. Pretending I enjoy these guys’ company is too much for my head. Their alpha status is the most important thing in life for them, and not because that means they help their clans, but because they enjoy the idea of having others submitting.

The sun has only started to set, and my bear begs me to go for a run. I stare at the woods with longing. The entire meeting-my-mate thing and dealing with these suckers made me antsy. I’m dying to stretch my legs. To hunt.

“So, what are we having tonight?” One of the other alphas asks Dick as we climb the porch’s steps.

“Andre has to go hunting yet. We can have some rabbits.”

The others grunt in disapproval. Night is falling, and the animal is not even caught. After catching the prey, Andre would have to bring him so it can be skinned, and then cooked. We’ll eat by ten p.m. and my stomach’s already rumbling. This is the cherry on top.

I wonder how Brian dealt with this. Pretty sure he didn’t give a shit about the business part, only about networking. He was that kind of guy. I remember how hard it was to make him remember any decisions made when he came back home after a meeting.

My gaze shoots to the tree line again. And as I ache for the ground beneath my paws and the wind on my fur, I sense Wyatt’s warm presence right next to me. He has this way of standing close but never touching. Keeping his distance inside my personal space. He respects me, and yet he can’t stay away.

“We should go,” he murmurs, close to my head. “My bear is dying for a stretch.” And I hear the unsaid, that he also wants some time away from these alphas.

I shoot him a glance and curve the corners of my lips. “Dick,” I call out without taking my eyes from Wyatt. “You can leave the hunt to us.”

It might be because I’ve been staring at the woods, but how did Wyatt read me so well? Even before Dick has given his acquiescence, my mate turns on his heels and steps down the porch, leading us to the forest. I tail him, not wasting the second I have to gawk at his defined ass. And his jeans aren’t even that tight.

We cross the tree line and keep going. I follow him behind a huge tree, and he turns to face me. His hair looks dark chocolate in this dim light, but his eyes are alight with expectation. “Shall we?” There’s no one close, but he keeps whispering.

It makes everything so intimate. And I like it.

I nod and turn my back to him, trusting he’ll do the same.
