What Happened

Considering Julia’s fragile physical and emotional state, her attorney advised against charging Morley with bigamy or attempted murder. Instead, immediate divorce proceedings were begun. Although he was located and served with papers, Morley did not appear in court and was charged with contempt. The judge assessed a sizable divorce settlement with interest compounded daily at the highest possible rate. After the divorce was final the judge took Julia’s hand gently and told her he didn’t expect her to see a penny of the money, but that the threat of the settlement would keep Morley away from her.

The judge who heard the criminal charges for writing hot checks and credit card fraud was not familiar with problems of family violence and would not consider the fact that Julia did these things under threat of death. He charged her with the responsibility of paying all the debts.

Julia entered counseling at the local battered women’s shelter, and is now paying off Morley’s enormous bills. The university reinstated her and, in addition to teaching, she is working at two and often three additional jobs. Morley has never paid a penny of the divorce settlement. He has suffered neither financial retribution nor punishment for his crimes. He has remarried and is battering his new wife.
