What happened in the aftermath of this event stands in stark contrast to Delafield’s prolonged agonizing over the Zerwekh millpond. On June 30 the DNR issued an order to reconstruct or remove the dam. At a public hearing on October 9 only two people besides the DNR representatives showed up to express their views—Bill Cushman and a friend. Both supported removal of the dam, which sprawled like a toppled colossus beside the free-flowing river.

The DNR declared the dam formally abandoned in March 2009 and removed it in the spring. Though the Small and Abandoned Dam fund had been used up, the fund had generated sufficient bond revenue to pay the total cost—less than eight thousand dollars—of removing the dam, burying the concrete debris on Cushman property, and stabilizing the river banks with annual ryegrass and erosion mats. Across the road from the cemetery where Cyrus Cushman lies in his grave, waiting for Judgment Day, the Bark is already undergoing a resurrection, resuming life as the river that Cyrus first encountered in the 1830s.
