Lucinda had begun to stich a new dress together from the fabrics Goody Henry had gifted her. She made herself busy with house work and sewing. It had been two days and nights since the fateful day at the hanging. No one spoke a word of it and she did not volunteer her own thoughts of the matter. It seemed, for a brief moment, that everything had gone back to being semi-normal. She still had not spoken to Isaac about his new role in the council, one he obviously omitted from telling her.

She slid the needle through the fabric and pulled, repeating the process. Pricking her finger with the sharp tip, she hissed and looked at her finger. A small pearl of blood pooled to the surface and she stared at her blood for a moment. It did not hurt, but she sat mesmerized. She heard a knock on her door and looked up, hearing his voice on the other side.

“Lucinda, it is Isaac. Please, open the door?”

She froze and looked back at her bleeding finger. Placing it in her mouth, she sucked the blood free and stood from where she sat. She wrapped part of her apron around her finger and opened the door to see Isaac standing there. He removed his hat and gave her a nod, she did not say a word, only stepped aside and allowed him entrance.

“I am sorry I did not come sooner. I—“

“Why did you not tell me?”

“Tell you?”

“Aye. Tell me that you were the one to execute. Or help. Either way, you had a hand in it. How could you keep me in the dark about it?”

“I could not tell you, Lucinda. I did not know myself until that day. I assumed I would do my duty in making sure things went according to plan, never that I would have to push someone to their death. You must understand, you must believe me.”

“Isaac, stop. Please. I wish not to argue or get into that right now. My head is aching and I wish to not speak of it,” she turned away from him then, her back to him as she neared the hearth and added a log in to continue the fire. She spoke again, not looking at him, “You say you do not believe. All I have is my belief. Belief that one day I will be the one you are executing.”

He did not respond at first, she feared he had gone when she turned around to see him gaping at her, rendered speechless by her words. “I will not hear of it, Lucy. Do not say such a thing. Why would you say such a thing?”

“Because either I am going mad…or I have gifts even I do not understand.”

“Gifts?”

“Aye. I prayed for it, I willed the rope to break.”

“Then perhaps God has answered your plea?”

“I was not praying to anyone in particular. I beckoned nature to save her, to do something.”

“You believe nature can save her and not God?”

“I do not see God changing anything.
