December 19, 2004: Burlington, Vermont

It was a blustery New England day today—cold with gusty winds. Lake Champlain, still retaining some of its autumn warmth, was giving off a dense fog. By early evening the wind had died down and a light snow began. I set up on the rooftop of my hotel parking structure, which had some bright lights to work under. It was a convenient location, although I did get odd looks from some pleasantly inebriated passersby.

At first the crystals arrived with thick rime coatings, but the rime diminished as the evening progressed. Just before midnight, the crystals became quite nice and I got some excellent pictures.

I couldn’t help but think of Wilson Bentley, taking the very first snowflake photographs in the late 1800s from his farm just down the road near Jericho. We both captured the recycled fogs of Lake Champlain, brought back to earth as frozen ice crystals. The cycle continues with the seasons, yet each resulting snowflake is unique.
