In the end, not only Poland was lost. The whole of Central Europe was subjugated to the Soviet Union. Poland moved westwards and millions of Germans were expelled from East Germany and Czechoslovakia when Europe's borders were redrawn after the war. Hitler’s ideas of new borders, ethnic cleansing, and the creation of satellite states, became reality. But it was done at German expense.

After the German invasion of the Soviet Union, Britain allied itself with Stalin. The main reason for this was perhaps that they were already at war with Germany. Now it was only about power politics. As Churchill remarked, "If Hitler invaded Hell, I would make at least a favorable reference to the Devil in the House of Commons.” [303]
