Chapter 21

Chester's Opus

“Hello?” the boy’s voice echoed down the stairwell.

At last. He had arrived.

“The ghost guy doesn’t talk much. He says it makes him tired,” said the girl. “Come on. I’ll show you this music he’s all desperate for you to play.”

Their footfalls echoed as they descended down the stone stairwell. The girl led the boy to the drum kit, and he picked up the sheet music and studied it.

“Wow,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like this.” He sat down and read over the notes for endless minutes. The girl child flopped down on a chair and wiggled one foot impatiently.

Finally, the boy said, “I’m not sure I can do it. Even if I could, what would it do? Would it make those spidery things like before? Or another millipede? Or the one like a crocodile?”

The girl lifted one shoulder. “I don’t know. This song is his, so it will make whatever he wants it to make, right?”

The boy frowned. “But why does he want one of those things?”

“I think he’s, like, trapped? Between worlds or something?” She bounced one knee up and down. “I mean he’s here right now, listening to us, probably, but he doesn’t have a body. Maybe the song would make him a body, I don’t know.”

The boy turned his attention to the sheet music again. “This is really amazing. I mean, I want to play it, I just don’t know if I’m able. Plus, it’s super long. This will take an hour to play, start to finish.”

“So get started,” the girl said curtly. “My parents are going to be back at ten. They think I’m home with my brother.”

The boy hesitated. “The thing is, what if it’s . . . an evil spirit? What if the minute we give it a body, it attacks us or something?”

“You’ve been reading too many horror stories.” The useless one rolled her eyes and sighed. “Whatever.” She sat up in the chair and looked around the empty place. She said loudly, to the room, “Hey, I brought him here. You want to try explaining all this to him, Ghost Guy?”

Chester ignored the flare of irritation at the girl’s disrespectful tone and gathered the magic around him. He only needed to burn a little now, just enough to convince the boy. He was close, so close.

He lit the magic and spoke.
