The tuned mass damper consists of a large block of concrete built under a shelter on the building’s roof and attached to two opposite walls of the building by springs (Figure 9.8). The block can slide with respect to the building in a shallow tank over a thin layer of oil. The weight of the concrete block and the stiffness of the springs are so chosen that when the building oscillates with its own period, the concrete block oscillates with the same period as the building. (This is why the damper is called “tuned”: its oscillations are “in step” with those of the building.)
