Chapter

Fifteen

LUCY

Her exchange with Micah had upset her more than she cared to admit, but there was nothing to be done about it now. She understood he was far away, dealing with his own issues, but Lucy wished she could be there to help him. She couldn’t believe another female was alone with him.

How improper.

She clicked her tongue as she shifted in her seat in the garden. Though really, hadn’t she just done the same with Micah? And hadn’t she spent alone time with Laurent, as well?

Laurent. She groaned.

Everything was becoming more complicated. She looked out at the many flowers in the garden, appreciating their beauty in this quiet space. It was so rare for her to have a moment of peace. Her mother’s bright red roses made her stomach coil with unease… She still had not forgiven her mother since their conversation, but she knew she’d have to speak with her soon enough.

The jangle of chains announced Jasper’s arrival before she laid eyes on him. “Your father wants to speak with you,” his oily tone declared as soon as he walked onto the garden terrace.

Lucy had barely sat down to warm herself in the sun before she was ushered off yet again. She wasn’t sure when she would get her much needed time to think.

Nodding begrudgingly, she walked to her father’s office, Jasper tight on her tail. After overhearing their conversation the day before, Lucy was careful with her words around him.

She knew this conversation with her father was imminent since her evening with Lord Sloan—but what Jasper had to do with it; she had little idea. His presence steadily increased since she had returned from Joterra, and any time she saw him was always too soon.

“What did you do this time?” Jasper whispered to her in the hall as they walked.

“Excuse me?” Lucy whirled to look at him, the image of the burned corpse at the front of her mind.

What does he know?

“What happened with Lord Sloan at dinner that has your father so determined to see you?” He took a brisk step toward her. “What did you tell him? What did you see?”

Lucy took a compulsive step back, creating a distance between herself and this odious male who kept provoking her.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Lucy lied.

Don’t worry, I won’t tell my father about your secret discussion with Laurent. Yet.

Rolling her eyes, she spun away from him. “Get out of my way so I can speak with my father.” And with that, she upped her speed, and made it to her father’s office without another comment from Jasper, much to his dismay.

“Hello, Father,” Lucy said politely, entering the room.

“My little flower,” Corvus boomed with a smile on his face. “Sit, darling.”

Lucy’s heart ached. It had been so long since she had talked to her father with such ease. He was happy and light, and seeing him this way almost made Lucy feel the same.

“Lord Sloan called in and said he had a wonderful evening with you.” His full cheeks rose on either side of his face.
