Chapter Twenty-Three

Remi

“There’s not enough land for us to cover,” Ellis sighed as we came to a stop in a slight dip in the forest.

“We need to get out of this dell,” I said instead of answering him. “It’s like we’re standing in a bowl waiting for them to come and surround us.”

Ellis gave me a look I couldn’t quite figure out. I was so used to having him talking in my head that his facial expressions were weirdly starting to confuse me.

Looking around, I took in our surroundings. We’d stopped in the worst strategic place we could find, and we definitely needed to find some kind of cover.

The shadows were already darkening, and we were only minutes away from sunset. Now wasn’t the time to be standing around having a chat. The portal would be opening soon, and we still hadn’t heard from Jared about whether anyone had left the gym.

“There’s no cover around here,” Garrett finally said. “This whole place gives us little options in terms of cover. Ellis is right. The perimeter of the school grounds is too small, it doesn’t give us enough options, and there’s definitely not enough to get any kind of distance between us and the hunt.”

“I’m guessing that’s kind of the point,” I sighed as I started to walk up the slight incline, heading further away from the school. “How far away are we from the boundary line?”

The guys walked by my side as we kept moving through the trees. There was little point in running now. If we couldn’t find cover, we’d put as much distance as possible between us and where the portal would open, assuming it happened in the same place. The trick was going to be moving fast enough to stay ahead of them tonight.

“Not far,” Corbin said, lifting his head as he scented the air. “Probably about ten minutes.”

“How close does the boundary run on the side of the campus where the lake and the gym are?”

“About the same. The school is pretty much in the middle. The closest it gets to the boundary is down the driveway to the school gates. But technically, the school also owns the land on the other side of the road,” Corbin told me. “Why, what are you thinking?”

“What you said earlier is still bothering me. What if we are looking for someone who isn’t part of the school?”

“I suppose we should know more in a couple of minutes,” Ellis said, his eyes fixed on the sky.

I knew he wanted to be up there. It had been a good strategy yesterday to have him as our eyes, but we couldn’t afford for him to be giving away our position. Not to mention, after last night, I was pretty sure Ellis had a big fucking target on his back when it came to the horde.

“We’ve got a problem,” Jared’s voice said over the comms.

“Of course, we fucking do,” Garrett mumbled.

When had this whole situation not gone fucking wrong? It was a shitstorm right from the very first second it started.
