Chapter Twenty-Nine

Hunter

Tossing the printed sheets of paper on the table, I started to pace the room again. Nothing. Useless.

Why didn’t the school look into the background of the people they brought to work here? How could they be so blasé about who they allowed to walk through our gates?

I could feel a sense of uselessness rising inside me, and all it did was stoke my rage.

Remi knew more than she was letting on. I knew she did.

My mind kept going back to the first night she was here and the gruesome discovery she made. She should have been scared. Fuck that. She should have been terrified. But there was a calm about her that spoke of someone who’d seen death before, someone who was familiar with it.

And then there was the tooth. I couldn’t believe it had slipped my mind at the time. But she’d pulled that tooth out of Aryanna, and I’d bet my life that she’d kept it.

So what had happened to the mysterious art teacher, who happened to show up on the day one of our students died, that could have made her so familiar with the brutality of death?

And why the fuck did that make me more concerned about her than suspicious?

Garrett was obsessed with this woman already, even though he barely knew her. And I’d seen how Corbin looked at her when he thought no one was looking. Could she have done something to them? She was only a human, so her resources would be limited. Unless she’d been placed here by one of the groups that wanted the school to fail.

But if she was affiliated with one of those groups, surely she would have called in the press when we’d found Aryanna.

Something wasn’t adding up here, and there was only one person who could fill in the blanks.

Already knowing it was a terrible idea, I stalked out of my room. Garrett and Corbin would be in class, which would be ending soon. That meant our new staff addition would be all alone with no one around to interrupt us, but time was limited.

Perfect.

When I reached her room, the temptation to barge inside without announcing myself was strong, but I’d made some headway with Remi by being nice to her, and it would be a shame to waste all of that hard work.

Or at least that was what I told myself as I knocked on her door.

It took her a few minutes, but I could hear the telltale signs of her moving inside. Hiding the evidence most likely. I knew she couldn’t be trusted.

When she opened the door and realised it was me, her eyes widened in surprise.

“Hunter! Erm, have you spoken with Garrett and Corbin today?” she asked, leaning out the door and peering down the corridor as if expecting the others to be there.

“Should I have?” I hit her with a boyish smile as I asked, cocking my head to the side playfully. It always disarmed women if you flirted with them a little.
