When it was explained to them that the LM was expensive and that it could not be displayed for such a re-enactment, Grumman decided to build a replica or mockup of the LM. To do this, they needed the design plans for the LM, which shouldnât have been a problem for a company that originally built it. One would assume that Grumman had kept meticulous records filed away for future reference.
Well, not so fastâ¦
Grumman employee Joel Taft:
All the LM design drawings were stored on one of the warehouses, and we needed some. Because our funds in space were being cut so sharply, they had just been thrown in boxes. Most of the boxes did not match their inventory sheets, and there were four thousand boxes of drawings. Many were to be thrown away â they were throwing away history â but I managed to find drawings of all the outer features of the vehicle. We ended up calling this last of the LMs âLM-71/2,â because we used drawings of LM-1 and LM-15.10
Once again, we have an example of NASA and its contractors using a lack of funding as an excuse for not keeping detailed records.
Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation was founded in 1929. In 1969, its name was changed to Grumman Aerospace Corporation. They produce military and civilian aircraft. So why would Grumman need funding to file away LM documents? Whether or not NASA provided funding, surely Grumman would have wanted to maintain meticulous documentation of the vehicle they designed and built, which was supposedly used in what has been described as the most significant scientific accomplishment of the 20th century. And no doubt they would have had their own resources to do it.
Yet, their LM design plans were thrown in boxes to be discarded to the garbage heap. The proponents will argue that there are still tens of thousands of documents for anyone to access. But this is misleading, since most of the documents that have been destroyed are core documents which would have been needed to build on, leading to future technology for manned lunar spacecraft missions and beyond.
Weâve just seen another example of core document being discarded and/or destroyed in the quote above, where Joe Taft said they managed to find enough drawings for the outer features of the LM. Enough drawings? Did he mean schematics? And when he said enough drawings, he actually meant the record was incomplete.
There is no excuse for the shoddy record keeping of documentation related to the Apollo program. Itâs clear, that the real purpose of the destruction of these documents was to prevent any other scientific institution, manufacturer, or even another country from trying to duplicate the Apollo program, and then finding out that this technology never worked in the first place. There just isnât any other explanation. And as mentioned in this series, missing documents are an ongoing issue when it relates to the Apollo program.
In the next chapter, weâll discuss
