Chapter 5 Abandonment of God's Ancient Paths

Before the Industrial Revolution of the 1840s, every child had a FATHER, a FAMILY, and a FUTURE. In fact, before 1940 in the U.S., almost every child had these same three F's. However, in today's society, it is a rare occurrence when these three qualities are intact in the life of a child growing up. By the time most people enter into adulthood, they have endured countless experiences of identity cursing by those close to them. This builds up a very thick, protective callus. Although this callus is meant to keep out further hurt, unfortunately, it also serves to keep out love, even from God.

WALLS KEEP OUT LOVE

The picture on the next page depicts a man who has been deeply wounded and not blessed during his childhood. (A man is used as an example here, but the principle works equally the same for a woman.) When cursing of identity came, it deeply wounded his heart, causing him to erect a wall to block further pain. Unfortunately, this same wall meant to block hurt is indiscriminate and also prevents the love of others from entering his heart.

Love can be received only when a risk of being hurt is taken, and the protective wall toward another individual is pulled down. The wall that was meant to block future hurt, however, is really not a wall at all. It is actually a shell that also keeps one's heart from receiving love from God as well as from people. This shell creates a resistance to God's love, which is usually not evident to the one in whose life it is operative. The result is that the man cries out to God for help, healing, and love, and it seems to him that God is far off and not hearing his cries.
