“You said you heard something yesterday,” I say, my gaze fixed on a bird sitting on a branch just outside the window. It’s been there for a while and shows no sign of going anywhere. “What was it?”

“Hunters.”

I shift my focus from the window to Nicholas crouched in front of the fire. His attention is on the wood he’s feeding into the grate, but I know he’s just doing it for my benefit.

Since the shifting to wolf strangeness that was yesterday, he’s kept his distance from me, as if he recognizes that I’m still not entirely comfortable sharing a treehouse with a shifter.

I’m not sure where he slept, or if he slept at all, but after he carried me to bed, I fell asleep while he was re-building the fire.

And ever since I woke this morning, everything he’s done has put him on the opposite side of the cabin from me. Feeding the fire, hunting—which I guess now makes sense why he wouldn’t need a knife or bow and arrow, when he’s got claws and sharp teeth—cooking, or just sitting at the dining table while I’m in bed. He hasn’t run out of things to do that will mean we’re not sharing the same part of the room.

“I thought you said there wasn’t a town nearby. Why would there be hunters around?”

Finished feeding the fire, he peers over his shoulder. “There are hunting lodges further down the mountain. They’re not always occupied, but occasionally we do get hunters staying.”

I search his expression, remembering the gunfire and wolf howl that drove me from the courtyard. “To hunt wolves?”

“And bears.” His lips twitch. “Bambi, too.”

Raising my legs, I wrap my arms around them and rest my chin on my knees. “You don’t think it was Matteo, do you?”

He shakes his head. “I picked up six scents and tracked them in the direction they’d have taken to reach the lodges.”

“But you didn’t see them?”

“No.”

“So it could have been Matteo?”

Rising, he crosses over to the dining table, where he sinks into a seat. “How many men did he have with him?”

After a moment, I lower my legs, edge to the end of the bed, and get to my feet. A frown creases Nicholas’ brow.

“My ankle doesn’t hurt anymore,” I tell him as I cross over to sit opposite him. “And it’s okay. You don’t have to stay away from me.”

“Because you’re no longer afraid of a wolf?”

“Because I’m no longer afraid of you. And Matteo had two men with him. Well, he did before you dealt with Julius.”

“I didn’t follow the men all the way, but I picked up more than enough scents to tell they were hunters. It’s not the first time I’ve noticed them where they shouldn’t have been.”

“I don’t understand.”

“This land is private.”

I’m even more confused than before. “What do you mean, private?”

“I mean, the pack bought this land hundreds of years ago, and there should be no hunters on it. Ever.”

“But then why didn’t you tell them to…” It suddenly dawns on me why he wouldn’t be in a position to tell them to leave.
