Nova

Nova just sat there for a moment. Finally, Ian pulled his hand away. She leaned back and folded her hands across her lap. “I wasn't expecting that."

She sat there just staring at him, still stunned. To say that she had not expected that was an understatement.

Joining his pack wasn't something she’d thought he’d invite her to do, at least not anytime soon. The thought had crossed her mind, of course, about joining a pack, because that was sometimes what single shifters did. They found themselves without a pride or a pack or clan or tribe, and they found one to take them in. But her situation was different.

"Have you talked to Roman about this?” she asked.

“Yes, I wanted his permission before I asked you.”

“Okay.” She rubbed her forehead. “I am not going to give you a quick answer. You know I need to think about this.”

“Yes. I would expect nothing less. I know that you are very careful and methodical in everything that you do and that you have very valid reasons for that. And I respect that. I just wanted you to know that the offer is out there. And it stands. There's no time limit on it.”

Could she do it? Could she move in with his pack?

It was too big of a question to even consider, especially in the chaos of this pizza place. She couldn’t let it consume her, and she couldn’t make a decision based on what she thought Ian wanted. As always, she had to think about Lexi. “As with everything you do, I really appreciate this. But I have to put this aside for now.”

“I can accept that,” he said. He cleared his throat and then stared intently at her. "You know we would be happy to deal with them. That way you don't have to spend the rest of your life on the run."

Ian’s eyes were rarely this serious. "When you say deal with them, what do you mean exactly? Confront them, beat them up, threaten them? Or… Kill them?" She whispered the last words.

He pressed his lips together. "I would be willing to do whatever it takes. We live in the human world, but we are not human. And we don't always follow human laws. I would never harm a human, but a shifter who’s after Lexi? Well, that’s a different story."

At that moment, she saw the predator in him clearly, and it was a comfort.

She wasn't sure about having her in-laws killed, but if it came down to it, she might be willing to do it herself. She just couldn't take on all of them alone. Not while she still had to protect Lexi.

She didn't think it was right. She would never condone murder. But they had left her with so few choices.

“No,” she said. “Not that. Not yet.”

And Ian nodded.
