Marcus paced the floor of the lobby. He usually thought of himself as a patient man. But he was more than a little curious about what was happening with Darcy. The need to get the confession and officially close the case was gnawing at Marcus’s gut.

How long had Chloe been gone? It seemed like hours. In reality, it’d been less than ten minutes—yet it was still long enough that he felt he should send a text and see what was going on. Just as he was about to do so, his phone pinged with an incoming message. He pulled the phone from his pocket and glanced at the screen, relieved to see the text was from Chloe.

“Mystery solved,” he muttered, sliding the message open.

It was a series of three pictures and two lines of text. The first photo was of Chloe, sitting on an infirmary bed. She wore a shirt and leggings—not the pantsuit from before, which to him seemed odd. Then he looked closer and stifled a curse. She wasn’t merely sitting on the bed—she was handcuffed to the railing.

Taking in a deep breath, he examined the next photo in the series. If the first picture had gotten him shaken, the second one left him shocked. It was a picture of two dead women. One was the guard, Gretchen. The other woman wore a blood-covered set of scrubs, and he guessed that she was the nurse.

The final picture stole Marcus’s breath. It was of a door, booby-trapped with a homemade bomb. The last message was a line of text: 7Million, US currency, and a jet that will land outside jail and take me to Argentina. You have 2 hours, or I will blow up the whole freaking jail.

How in the hell was Marcus supposed to get a plane willing to take a serial killer out of the country? Never mind being able to find millions of dollars. And all of it in a couple of hours?

It was impossible.

Then again, Darcy had to know that her demands were unreasonable.

Which meant she really wanted something else. But what?

Marcus’s pulse spiked. There was a lot to consider and do. First, the jail had to be evacuated, which meant he had to alert the warden. The glass-enclosed office was empty. He beat on the door. There was no response. He removed a business card from his pocket. Cal Douglas. NWCF, Warden. He entered the number into his phone. The call was answered on the third ring. “Hello? Who is this?”

“This is Marcus Jones with Rocky Mountain Justice.”

“Of course,” said the warden. “What can I do for you?”

“I’m standing in your lobby.” Marcus didn’t have time to waste with small talk and continued, “You need to evacuate this facility immediately. I don’t know how it happened yet, but Darcy Owens has killed one guard and another woman—the nurse, I think. She’s taken the district attorney hostage. They’re holed up in the infirmary, and Darcy has booby-trapped the door with a homemade explosive device.
