CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Bree pulled her weapon, dived behind a partition, and took aim over it. She saw Matt duck behind an engine block. Scanning the workshop, Bree used her lapel mic to call for assistance. “Shots fired. Request backup and an ambulance.” Without waiting for a response, she gave her location.

Parka Man leveled his shotgun at her and fired, the boom deafening. The shot hit the wall somewhere behind her. Bits of debris went flying. Bree pulled her own trigger. The bullet hit him in the thigh. His body jerked, but he didn’t go down.

He pumped the shotgun’s lever, preparing to shoot again. Bree fired a second shot. He stumbled backward. A red stain bloomed on the front of the pale-gray sweatshirt he wore under the parka. Shock widened his eyes, and he dropped to one knee. The shotgun fell from his grip and clattered to the concrete.

“Push it away,” Bree commanded.

But the man collapsed, clutching his side.

Bree made no move toward the weapon. In order to seize the shotgun, they would have to go through the doorway. They had seen four men, and one was down, but they had no idea if there were more suspects hiding or if they were armed.

Matt’s mouth was moving, but Bree couldn’t hear anything but ringing in her ears and her own slamming heartbeat. He pointed to the exit behind them, and Bree saw one of the men running for the door, clutching a wad of cash in one hand and stuffing prescription bottles in his jacket pocket with the other. They’d have to go after him once the immediate danger had been eliminated. Benjamin had taken cover behind the workbench. Was he armed?

“I’m shot!” the wounded man on the ground yelled.

“Push the shotgun away with your foot!” Bree commanded.

He lay on the concrete, moaning. Blood leaked from his leg and stained the floor dark red. But Bree couldn’t assist him just yet. Moving into the open would make her a target.

One of the four men was still missing.

A movement to her left caught her attention. The fourth man charged out from behind a truck, running toward Matt. He was as tall as Matt but thinner. Most of his visible skin was covered with tattoos. Bree caught the gleam of metal in his hand.

A knife!

He raised the knife over his head. Bree shifted her aim, but not before Matt stood, jumped out from behind the engine, and assumed a ready stance. Bree had no clear shot. The knife arced down toward Matt’s head as if the man were swinging an ice pick. Matt shifted sideways and caught his attacker’s wrist in both of his hands. In a fluid motion, he stepped out of the path of the knife. As the man’s momentum carried him forward, Matt twisted the man’s arm. The knife went flying, and the man stumbled past Matt. Catching his balance, the man spun and jabbed a fist at Matt’s face.

Matt ducked and weaved, delivering an uppercut with the power of his legs.
