CHAPTER TWELVE

Mateo couldn’t stop touching his lower lip. It still blazed from the soft, cool touch of Kailyn’s mouth. Her kiss had been fleeting, but it had left an impact.

As a soldier, Mateo had been on a plane during a storm. He’d been on a battlefield with gunfire. He’d faced hand-to-hand combat where he was outnumbered.

None of those harrowing ordeals had rocked him the way that Kailyn’s kiss had.

He felt dizzy for the rest of the night. When he got up the next morning, he had to look down repeatedly to ensure his feet were touching the ground. All through the afternoon, he had to concentrate on taking deep breaths, but still the air didn’t completely fill his lungs.

It hadn’t bothered him this morning that the bathroom hadn’t been free until well after breakfast. Mateo had debated for hours whether or not to brush his teeth last night and decided not to. He wasn’t so sure he’d change his mind this morning. He was seriously contemplating never washing his face again. Or at least not until kissing Kailyn Jade became a part of his everyday routine.

He could see that future with the two of them together. It was so clear as he stood looking out at the sprawling pastures of the Flying Cross Ranch. Mateo knew this land like he knew the back of his hand.

He'd spend days when he got here as an adolescent roaming free. He knew the bend of every tree branch. He could judge the distance h’'d gone by the color of the wildflowers growing beneath his feet. He could tell the time of day by which animal sounds were the loudest in his surroundings.

As he'd come to know the ranch as a kid, he'd always imagined having one person by his side on his explorations. Very soon, he'd bring Kailyn to the two trees that had grown so close together it looked as though they were hugging. He'd pick a bouquet of white, blue and yellow wildflowers for her and sit by and watch her bring the flowers to life on one of her canvases. He'd tune out the world when he cupped his hand to her cheek and brought their mouths together in a kiss that would last the entire day and into the night.

The idea of a bright and colorful and kiss-filled future thrilled Mateo so much he heard a ringing in his head. Then he realized it was his phone. The thought of Kailyn calling him had him diving to accept the call.

He put the device to his ear with a breathy, "Hello."

"Hey, bro."

Mateo realized he was still pressing his fingers to his Kailyn-kissed lips. He dropped his hand from his mouth at the sound of Aldo's voice.

"Were you eating or drinking something sweet right now? I swear I just got a sugar rush"

Mateo balled his hands into fists. This was another of those times where Aldo took their twin sense too far. If Mateo truly thought his twin could feel what it was like to kiss Kailyn, then Mateo would have to punch his brother in the mouth.
