Chapter 9

JoJo drove with Max in the front passenger seat of the SUV.

Maria’s stomach twisted in a knot, and her heart ached all the way into Colorado Springs. Her dash for freedom from a terrible man had resulted in nearly losing her daughter to a landslide and getting her so sick she needed emergency medical attention. What kind of mother did that to her child?

Venom squeezed her hand gently. “She’s tough. A fighter like her mother.”

“But she’s so small. Her body is so fragile,” Maria whispered, her gaze on her daughter’s face flushed with fever. She lay with her cheek across Venom’s thigh, so still, her breath shallow, her chest barely moving.

Would they ever get there?

What seemed like an eternity passed before JoJo pulled into the Emergency Room entrance at the Children’s Hospital in Colorado Springs.

As soon as the vehicle came to a halt, Maria popped the buckle on her seatbelt and then Sofia’s. Venom jumped out of the SUV and gently lifted Sofia into his arms.

Maria hurried around the vehicle and entered the hospital at his side.

The first hurdle was getting past the receptionist, who was taking names and insurance cards.

Maria hesitated to give a name and certainly had no medical insurance card or any other form of identification.

“I’m sorry, ma’am. We need some form of identification,” the woman said. “We can’t treat the child without it.”

A second administrative person stepped up beside the woman who’d demanded Maria’s ID. He leaned close and whispered what sounded like let them in.

The woman’s eyes widened, and she looked up at the young man behind her. “The Sadie McClain? Wow.” She turned to Maria. “You know Sadie McClain personally?”

Maria started to say no.

Before she could, Venom nudged her arm and spoke first. “My fiancée and I are close friends. I work for her husband. They take care of their people.”

“I’ll say they do,” the woman said, clicking keys on her keyboard. “They pretty much gave us a blank check to cover all of your expenses.” A printer whirred beside her. “All I need is a signature from one of the child’s parents that allows us to treat her.”

As Maria signed the paper, a nurse pushing a gurney stepped through the door marked Authorized Personnel Only.

“If you’ll lay her on the bed, we’ll get her right back to an exam room.”

Venom laid Sofia on the gurney, blanket and all.

“Mommy?” Sofia called out.

“Right here, mija.” Maria stepped up beside her daughter and took her hand. “This nice nurse is going to take you back to see the doctor.”

Sofia’s hot hand gripped hers. “Don’t leave me.”

“You can come with her,” the nurse said. She stepped up to a large square button on the wall and pressed it.

The automatic door opened. She gripped the end of the gurney and pulled it through the wide opening.

Maria and Venom walked alongside the bed, within sight of Sofia.

“I’m scared,” Sofia whispered, her gaze moving from Maria to Venom.

Maria’s heart clenched. Sofia hadn’t been in a hospital since she’d been born.
