The logistics of having Brandon left behind on the ship, since the Children’s Center was closed for the day, was too difficult to work out. Christy didn’t want anyone else in the group to be responsible for him, so it was decided that Brandon would come with them today on shore.

Nearly two-thirds of their group boarded the two buses for the Todos Santos village tour. Kyle and Christy sat behind Brandon and Luke. Maggie sat on her mom’s lap and promptly fell asleep.

“Has anyone been able to get in touch with the doctor?”

“Nope. He hasn’t returned my call, either. I’m guessing I’ll be meeting with the captain tonight. Perfect timing, too, because it’s the captain’s dinner.”

“I imagine he’ll be thrilled,” she said, rolling her eyes at her husband.

“We’ll see. They had time to off-load the girls at the dock early this morning or even yesterday at the pickup. They could be long gone, so it’s going to be hard to prove, but we’ll launch an inquiry anyway.”

“You did what you could.”

“I have this feeling in my gut that I don’t like. But part of me definitely hopes there’s nothing to see.”

“That would make sense,” Christy mused. “Afterall, we are supposed to be on vacation. A cruise is not supposed to be a high contact sport. There aren’t devils under every rock. Maybe this is a good wakeup call for you to just relax and enjoy yourself.”

“But I can’t until I know.”

“But, Kyle, you’re going to ruin it for everyone else, too, if you’re not careful.”

“They don’t feel that way. How come you do?” His look was angry. Instead of cooling the flame, she’d enraged him again.

Christy knew it was a control issue. He liked information, craved it even. He wasn’t going to back down until he’d been convinced what he saw was rotten consensual behavior. Because the girls looked underage, he couldn’t let it go.

“I know you only want what’s right. I respect that. But if you don’t get straight answers, it doesn’t have to mean there’s a conspiracy going on. Not every ship carries trafficked humans, Kyle. You know this.”

He put his arm around her. “Maybe you’re right. We’ve seen so much, though. It’s a losing war, and I never thought I’d be saying this. Modern day slavery. It was wrong then, and it’s wrong now.”

“And I know Brandon isn’t helping things, either.” Brandon looked over his shoulder as he heard his name.

Kyle leaned forward. “You going to behave?” His words were pointed, but his face was soft, filled with love for their son, no matter what.

“Yessir. Besides, you confiscated Ali’s sling shot.”

“His dad has it,” corrected Kyle. “And that’s where it’s going to stay the whole rest of the trip.”

“Do you suppose you could make me one when we get back to San Diego? I think I would be good at it.”

“We’ll see. All depends on your behavior, Brandon.”

After the youngster turned around, Christy kissed Kyle on the cheek.

“Thanks for doing this, Christy. For arranging this beautiful vacation. I think we need to do more,” he sighed.
