No Way Out

Lara’s face turned pale. “They can’t find us in here!”

Maye hurried across to a cupboard and climbed in. Lara got inside next to her, and Barney jumped in between the two girls before Maye pulled the doors shut. Meanwhile, Tom and Rufus hid themselves in a cupboard on the other side of the room.

Both Lara and Maye held their arms around Barney in the dark space. He sensed their nervousness and knew that he had to keep quiet.

“What about Daisy?” Lara whispered to Maye.

“Hopefully she’s hiding too.”

They waited, each trying to formulate an escape plan, without success. Their chances of making their way back to Logan and Dee seemed hopeless while they were stuck on the Poseidon being carried out to sea.

Footsteps and voices became audible from the corridor.

Tom had a sudden realisation and gasped, turning to Rufus. “The chest!”

Rufus opened the door and peeked out to see the metal chest in the middle of the room. The enemy would see it as soon as they walked in.

The boys jumped out and dragged it across the carpet, their hearts thumping in their chests.

With deep breaths, they lifted the heavy chest up a couple of inches and swung it forward into the cupboard.

“Who are you?”

The door was open, and a tall, tanned blond man stood by it, wearing a smart white shirt and jeans, speaking in an American accent. The boys looked around, and Barney sprang out from the cupboard and launched himself towards the man, who quickly let himself back into the corridor and closed the door behind him. A key turned in the lock.

Maye and Lara emerged from their hiding place.

“Listen,” called the man from behind the door. “I want to talk to you. Hold that dog back, or he’ll be thrown overboard. You hear?”

Lara took her lead from her backpack and clipped it onto Barney’s collar. She stroked his head as he sat down. “He’s on his lead now.”

“Petros, Thanasis, get in here.” The man entered through the door, followed by the twins.

“Mr King,” said Petros, “these are the kids who escaped from Arkoudi with the woman.”

“Is that so?” Mr King turned to the group in front of him. “Would one of you care to tell me what’s been going on?”

“You’re the ones who chased us off the islands,” said Maye, folding her arms. “You’d better tell us what’s going on. Tell us what you’ve done with Christos?”

Mr King threw his head back and laughed. “Little girl, you’re trespassing on my yacht, and we could throw the lot of you overboard. I’d think carefully before you make demands.”

Thanasis raised an eyebrow. “Where are the rest of you?”

“Logan hurt his leg,” said Tom, hoping that Thanasis had not registered that another girl was missing from their group. “Dee was with him when the rest of us saw your yacht.”

“And what made you think you could get on board a stranger’s yacht without permission?” asked Mr King.

Tom glanced at the others for a moment before looking straight into Mr King’s green eyes.
