âHello,â Gita whispered into her mobile phone. She had dialled a number from memory.
âWhat?â The familiar voice at the other end was stern, unemotional, blunt.
âArenât you happy I called?â Gitaâs excitement vanished. Her whisper increased in volume and became emotional and concerned.
Silence
âWhat? Arenât youââ
âYes.â
âWhat?â
âYes, Iâm happy.â
âYou donât sound happy.â
âOhhhâtrust me. Iâm happy.â
âWhy are you getting annoyed? I was just asking.â
âWhat is it?â
âWhere are you?â
âIs that why youâve called me? To ask me where I am?â
âNo, itâs something more important.â The concern in Gitaâs voice was growing.
âWhat?â
âI wonât tell you that unless you tell me where you are.â
âIâm in town. Happy?â
âYeeees.â
âWhat is it that you want to tell me?â
âUh-huh! Not like this.â
âWill you stop playing your childish games? Tell me now.â Dilipâs voice was devoid of any curiosity, any feeling.
âNo. Notâlikeâthis.â
âWhat do you want?â
âYou have to promise me.â
âWhat?â
âThat you will meet me.â
âAre you mad?â
âFor you. You know that.â
âIâm hanging up!â
âWait, wait. I need to tell you something.â
âDo it quickly.â
âLook, Dilip. You wonât understand this.â All playfulness gone, Gitaâs voice had become taut and quivered with unshed tears. âDilip,â she continued, without waiting for an answer, âare you listening? Everything cannot be stated in this manner. Some things need atmosphere, a willingness to listen and to respondââ
âIâll meet you, what is it?â
âWhere? When?â
âWhat?â
âWhere are we going to meet? And when?â
âThat weâll decide. You tell me first what you want to talk about.â
âA childâ¦â
Silence
âDilip⦠Dilip?â
Silence
âDilip, pleaseââ
âWhat?â
âIâm going to have a child.â
Silence
âAre you there? Dilip?â
âYes, yes. Whatââ
âYes. And itâs yours.â
âDoes your husbandââ
âHe knows. Heâs the one who paid the doctorâs fee and took me to the patho lab. He thinks itâs his. Heâs so happy. Foolish man!â While Gitaâs voice took on a playful tone again, the playfulness was made up. It was as if she was speaking through tears, pretending to be happy.
âGita, lookââ
âI want to meet you, Dilip.â Gita nearly broke down but held herself together at the last instant. âPlease. Where do I come? Itâs been so many days.â
âListen, Gitaââ
âYou just tell me where I have to come. And you have to be there.â
âIâmâIâm going out of town.â
âWhat?â
âYes.â
âBut you just said youâd meet me.â
âYes, but I hadnât paid attention. This thing just slipped out of my mind.â
âWhen are you going?â
âTomorrow. Morning.â
âThen we can meet tonight.â Gita nearly shouted in excitement. âIâll come. You just tell me where. You donât know me. I can come.â
âListen, Iâll be busy in the evening. I have to make preparations.â
âWhy do you have to go?â
âDidnât you ask me to become somebody? So that I could come and take you away with me?â
âDilip, that⦠How long are you going to be away?â
âErrâoneâweek. Maybe more. Depends.â
âDilip, I want to meet you, Dilip, I canât live without you, Dilip, come to me, Dilip, take me away, Dilipââ
By this time, the tears that she had so far held back began flowing. She felt like running away, following the sound of Dilipâs voice. But she couldnât.
âIâllâIâll come.â Dilip hesitated, sounded utterly unconvincing.
âYouâll meet me after one week.â Gita stopped crying, got a grip on herself, and ordered in a stern voice.
