I hadn’t blown off thinking about my future career completely while I was in law school. I’d made some minimal effort during my three years to go through the job-hunt motions. Once again, it seemed that it was what I was supposed to do, as I was still dealing with the obsession of “fitting in.” However, graduating in the bottom half of my class didn’t exactly put me in a prime position for the Big Law firms that put out sign-up sheets outside the law-school placement office. My one trip through their doors for advice constituted a look at my grades, what I thought was a snicker, and a “Have you considered private practice?” I had not considered it. (And I wouldn’t consider it until eight years later when I set up a private practice simply because I needed to eat, pay rent, and buy drugs and alcohol.)

So in the end, I took the Bar, packed my bags, and headed for Dallas, just as I’d planned all along. I couldn’t wait.
