Notes

Smith’s prescriptions on taxing luxuries also bears on another important contribution of the book, highlighting the unexpected similarities in the two authors regarding the treatment of freedom and autonomy. Herzog argues that both “care about not only about liberty as the absence of obstacles, but also about people’s ability to act autonomously,” pace Hayek (2013, 121). She finds Smith’s countermeasures as effective only regarding competence for autonomy, however, but not enough to guarantee authenticity. Yet, her discussion of luxury could have been enhanced by considering the various taxes discussed above that Smith imposes on luxuries and that aimed clearly at reducing their consumption and thus presumably pushing individuals towards a more “authentic” existence (2013, 125).

In my article, I offer a formula that provides estimates as to what the maximum personal wealth could be such that proprietors would still need to work; even with the most generous assumptions, the amounts would not be very high (Boucoyannis 2013, 1063).

This is the argument in Hacker and Pierson’s Winner Take-All Politics (2010).

This is the concept of “redistribution” advocated by Jacob Hacker (2011).
