16TH DAY.

All our heroes rose as sprightly as if they had just come from confession, except for the Duc, who was beginning to wear himself out a little. Duclos was blamed for this: there was no doubt this girl had thoroughly mastered the art of gratifying his senses and he confessed it was only with her that he came lubriciously. So true it is that in such things everything hinges on a whim – that age, beauty, virtue, all this makes no difference, that it is simply a matter of a certain delicacy grasped more often by beauties in the autumn of their lives than by those lacking in experience whom spring still crowns with all its gifts. There was also another creature among their company who was beginning to make herself most delightful and to become most alluring: this was Julie. She was already showing signs of imagination, debauchery and libertinage; politic enough to sense she needed protection, false enough to cosy up even to those for whom deep down she perhaps cared little, she made friends with Madame Duclos in an attempt to remain on good terms with her father, whose influence among the company she recognized. Nonetheless he was utterly jaded when it came to his daughter and, without the help of Madame Duclos, who used all her influence to support her, she would perhaps never have succeeded in her designs; her husband, Curval, felt more or less the same way about her, and though she could still make him come on occasion with her mouth and her impure kisses, his sense of disgust was never far away – it seemed to spring from the very flames of her shameless kisses. Durcet held her in rather low esteem and she had barely managed to make him come twice since their arrival; so that left only the Bishop, who adored her libertine turn of phrase and thought she had the finest arse in the world – there was no doubt she had one as shapely as Venus herself. She thus fought a rearguard campaign, for she was keen to please, whatever the price; because she realized she was in desperate need of protection, she wanted this badly. Only Hébé, Constance and Madame Martaine appeared at the chapel that day, and no one had been found to be at fault that morning; after the 3 subjects had made their deposits, Durcet wanted to do the same – the Duc, who had been flitting around his backside all morning, seized this moment to satisfy himself, and they both shut themselves away in the chapel with only Constance in attendance. The Duc satisfied himself, as the little financier completely filled his mouth with shit; these gentlemen did not stop
