2 onions
1 cup whole milk
1 cup whole-wheat flour
½ teaspoon salt
pinch of pepper
¼ teaspoon garlic powder (or more, to taste)
1 Begin heating your cooking oil.
2 In a plastic food bag, combine flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Slice the onions as thinly as you can and break the slices into individual rings with your fingers. Dip them in milk. Drop the wet onions into the bag, no more than a few at a time, and shake the bag. When the onions are coated with flour, remove them from the bag, shaking off excess flour.
3 Once your cooking oil has heated, turn the heat down to medium-low. Be aware that thin-sliced onion rings cook very quickly. Ladle into the hot oil and remove when golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Immediately salt lightly and serve hot.
