AFTER WORKING at a U.S. intelligence agency during World War II (because she was too tall to enlist in the Women’s Army Corps!), Julia Child met her husband, and they traveled to Paris for his job in the foreign service. It was while in France that her palate and spirit were expanded by the delightful and unfamiliar terrain of French cuisine.

At thirty-eight years old, Child attended Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and then studied with several master chefs. From there, she went on to write defining cookbooks about French cuisine for an American audience, including Mastering the Art of French Cooking. She also became a television icon, starring in various cooking shows that highlighted her hearty humor, playfulness, and distinctive voice.

Child is credited with bringing approachable French cooking into American homes, and she did so with refreshing authenticity and good cheer. She went on to become the first woman inducted into the Culinary Institute Hall of Fame and remains an inimitable legend in the food world.

Not afraid of the limelight or stepping out of her comfort zone, Child is a reminder to all to live with joyful curiosity regardless of age, and never to be afraid to cook with a whole lot of butter.
