âYou know, I could almost feel sorry for Scarlett,â Rissa said to the women seated around the table at the Austin restaurant two weeks later. Then she snorted. âNot.â
Veronica nudged her in the side. âYou donât mean that. Sheâs growing on youâ¦Cousin Crankypants.â Veronica grinned, and the rest of the group laughed.
Rissa glanced around. âI still canât believe you all just jetted down here,â she said to Lorie, Elena and Sammie Marshall.
âWhen you live in the boonies of West Texas, a husband with a jet really helps,â Lorie responded. âElenaâs logged more air miles than any of us since she married Josh.â
âGet ready,â Elena said to Rissa. âYouâre looking at your future. Mackeyâs been asking Josh for recommendations on aircraft.â
Rissa blinked. âNo way.â
âWay,â Lorie responded. âSweetgrass isnât near any major airport, either.â
Veronica tried to imagine Rissa with an airplane at her disposal. Or being involved with the rich and famous, period. She couldnât. âIt was still really nice of you to come all the way down here to meet.â
âYou have the two objects of our adventure living where you are,â Maddie responded. âYou canât get away as easily. Perrie and I drove down from Morning Star and left Boone and Mitch with the kids. Dev is home with his and Laceyâs three. And of course it makes no sense to drive back tonight, with our families meeting us in Sweetgrass tomorrow, soââ A gusty sigh. âWeâll just have to suffer through a night in the big city.â
âAwww,â affectionately jeered her sister Lacey. âCountry mouse missing the bright lights?â
âNo way,â Maddie scoffed. âWell, except for the spas and the clothes and theâ¦â She laughed. âNope. I know you need to live in Houston, but give me sleepy old Morning Star any old day.â
âL.A. is okay.â Elena smiled. âFor about five minutes. I guess itâs having grown up in the relative silence of the Arizona desert that makes living there difficult for me.â
âNew Orleans is anything but silent,â Sammie said. âItâs them, ladiesâour guys. Face it, weâre married saps.â She smiled, then abruptly flushed and glanced at Veronica. âIâm sorry. Iâm really sorry. I wasnât thinking.â
âItâs okay. Seriously. Davidâs been gone for over a year now. Iâmââ Used to it, she started to say.
But she wasnât.
She was so lonely she thought she would die sometimes.
A pall fell over the group, making her feel worse. She had to lift the mood. She was sick to death of being an object of pity. âSoâ¦anyone else wish sheâd been a fly on the wall when Jeanette was reeling Scarlett in?â
Rissa burst out laughing. Maddie joined her, then addressed the Marshalls. âYou all havenât had the pleasure,â she explained. âBut Jeanette wouldnât spit on Scarlett if she was on fireâand vice versa. How on earth Ruby ever put that in playâ¦â
âRuby is brilliant.â
âRubyâs the best,â Maddie agreed. âSo how badly is she going to strip the hide off me when she realizes sheâs been had, too?â
âMackey told Ian,â Rissa blurted. âAnd Ian told Arnieâbut for good reason, so they could buy rings.
