“You know, I could almost feel sorry for Scarlett,” Rissa said to the women seated around the table at the Austin restaurant two weeks later. Then she snorted. “Not.”

Veronica nudged her in the side. “You don’t mean that. She’s growing on you…Cousin Crankypants.” Veronica grinned, and the rest of the group laughed.

Rissa glanced around. “I still can’t believe you all just jetted down here,” she said to Lorie, Elena and Sammie Marshall.

“When you live in the boonies of West Texas, a husband with a jet really helps,” Lorie responded. “Elena’s logged more air miles than any of us since she married Josh.”

“Get ready,” Elena said to Rissa. “You’re looking at your future. Mackey’s been asking Josh for recommendations on aircraft.”

Rissa blinked. “No way.”

“Way,” Lorie responded. “Sweetgrass isn’t near any major airport, either.”

Veronica tried to imagine Rissa with an airplane at her disposal. Or being involved with the rich and famous, period. She couldn’t. “It was still really nice of you to come all the way down here to meet.”

“You have the two objects of our adventure living where you are,” Maddie responded. “You can’t get away as easily. Perrie and I drove down from Morning Star and left Boone and Mitch with the kids. Dev is home with his and Lacey’s three. And of course it makes no sense to drive back tonight, with our families meeting us in Sweetgrass tomorrow, so—” A gusty sigh. “We’ll just have to suffer through a night in the big city.”

“Awww,” affectionately jeered her sister Lacey. “Country mouse missing the bright lights?”

“No way,” Maddie scoffed. “Well, except for the spas and the clothes and the…” She laughed. “Nope. I know you need to live in Houston, but give me sleepy old Morning Star any old day.”

“L.A. is okay.” Elena smiled. “For about five minutes. I guess it’s having grown up in the relative silence of the Arizona desert that makes living there difficult for me.”

“New Orleans is anything but silent,” Sammie said. “It’s them, ladies—our guys. Face it, we’re married saps.” She smiled, then abruptly flushed and glanced at Veronica. “I’m sorry. I’m really sorry. I wasn’t thinking.”

“It’s okay. Seriously. David’s been gone for over a year now. I’m—” Used to it, she started to say.

But she wasn’t.

She was so lonely she thought she would die sometimes.

A pall fell over the group, making her feel worse. She had to lift the mood. She was sick to death of being an object of pity. “So…anyone else wish she’d been a fly on the wall when Jeanette was reeling Scarlett in?”

Rissa burst out laughing. Maddie joined her, then addressed the Marshalls. “You all haven’t had the pleasure,” she explained. “But Jeanette wouldn’t spit on Scarlett if she was on fire—and vice versa. How on earth Ruby ever put that in play…”

“Ruby is brilliant.”

“Ruby’s the best,” Maddie agreed. “So how badly is she going to strip the hide off me when she realizes she’s been had, too?”

“Mackey told Ian,” Rissa blurted. “And Ian told Arnie—but for good reason, so they could buy rings.
