Chapter 8
Delene Younger was pounding on Martiâs door by the time she got to the house from the barn.
âYou know, you could just check to see if itâs locked rather than trying to knock it down.â
Delene whirled around and slapped her hand to her chest. âGirl! You almost gave me a heart attack.â
âWhat are you doing here? We just saw each other a couple of hours ago.â
Delene jabbed her finger toward Marti. âYou might fool Tina with that I fell asleep on him and nothing happened story, but not me. I know you better than that. If that was the honest truth, you wouldnât have picked at your salad, hardly reacted when I said I thought I might shave my head for summer, and then hurried off as soon as you could. Something happened with Dr. Hottie.â
Marti sighed and opened the unlocked front door. âCome on in. Want something to drink?â
Delene followed Marti to the kitchen.
âGot a Diet Coke?â
Marti lifted an eyebrow. âNeed you ask?â
She opened the refrigerator and pulled out a couple of Diet Cokes and joined Delene at the kitchen table.
âSo,â Delene said as she popped the tab on the can. âWhat happened?â
âEverything I told you was true. I swear.â
âUh-huh. But you didnât tell us everything.â
âNeed a glass for your Coke?â
Delene snorted. âYou really donât want to say, do you?â Then she gasped. âYou didnât sleep with him, did you? On a first date? That is so not like you.â
âRight. We had a great toss on the hay after watching Princess give birth. Nothing sexier than amniotic fluid, a wet, slightly smelling newborn, and watching a new mother lick the afterbirth. I mean, who wouldnât want to strip and screw after that?â
Deleneâs loud, deep laugh echoed around the kitchen. âYou do have a point.â
Marti smiled and gave in. Delene wasnât just one of her best friends. Theyâd been together since first grade.
âFine. He kissed me.â
Delene shrugged. âI know. You told us that at lunch today.â
âI might not have been completely honest at lunch.â
Delene leaned forward. âReally? So there was kissing going on when I saw you two cuddled on the patio.â
âNot there, well, there too, but mostly when we got to my house. The first kiss was sweet. Soft. Really just barely a kiss. But thenâ¦ohmigod, he backed me into my door and kissed me like a starving man finding a loaf of bread. It wiped my mind of any thoughts but how to get closer to him.â She looked at Delene. âAnd the only way we could be closer would have been skin to skin. It was like my soul wanted to climb inside him. It was the most erotic, sensual kiss Iâve ever had.â
âBetter than the ex?â
âHa. No comparison. If he hadnât been holding me against my door with his body, I probably would have melted in puddle of begging lust. I swear. I was thinking about inviting him inâand yes, I know I have never gone to bed with a guy on the first dateâwhen Pedro rode up and told me about Princess in labor.
